- Hi everybody,
-
- someone emailed me and requested a repost - a config-error on my own
- machine had caused the message to be split up and he had only seen the
- last part of it, so here is another attempt.

- Hi Kevin,
-
- KS> Boy do I need help!! I was upgrading ny A3000 with a Seagate
- KS> ST51080N 1 Gig Hard Drive. While upgrading my Maxtor 345 meg HD
- KS> crashed unrecoverably. I had not done a comlpeat back up in a while
- KS> and lost quite a few files. Anyhow I did have most of the important
- KS> files backed up. The system won't recognize the Seagate as a valid
- KS> DOS device on start/boot up. I'm hoping that someone will be able to
- KS> help me.
-
- Tried a warm boot? if it gets recognized then you just have to move a
- jumper somewhere on the controller (assuming that it is in fact 'really'
- an A2091 to allow for relaxed timing during boot, otherwise it will time
- out on the drive and not see it. This at least can be a problem with
- some older Seagates, mine is a ST157N, so it really is 'stoneage'.
-
- KS> SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:
-
- KS> Amiga 3000; one low density internal drive; one internal hard drive
- KS> the seagate 1 gig HD; no boards; no roms; nothin' fancy; soft kick
- KS> 2.04; Workbench 2.1. Externally, a Zip drive; a Reno CD-Rom; and a
- KS> Power XL High Density disk drive.
-
- I'll leave this in in case there are something special about that setup,
- just see my advice as 'generic', thanks, and do note that it even could
- be plain wrong.
-
- KS> PROBLEM:
-
- KS> I low level formated and partitioned the Seagate in to three
- KS> partitions. The first I named WB_2.x and made bootable. I then
- KS> restored the back up I had made on the Maxtor to the Seagate. On
- KS> power up the Amiga will not load the Kickstart file that is in devs
- KS> and it gives a system requester saying that the hard disk is a non
- KS> DOS disk. Holding down both mouse buttons while rebooting gives me
- KS> the kickstart menu. After loading kickstart from floppy the system
- KS> gives me the insert bootable disk window. After booting from a
- KS> bootable floppy all the partitions on the hard disk are recognized
- KS> and are valid. Why can't I boot from the hard drive? Why won't the
- KS> system recognize the hard drive as a valid device and load the
- KS> kickstart file?
-
- At a glance it seems to be the time-out problem described, seems like
- Seagates still won't start up unless they have had their coffee and a
- bagel.
-
- KS> I thought that it was a termination problem. The
- KS> Seagate has a jumper for termination and it is set for termination
- KS> on. Further Seagate has FOUR diffrent ways to power the termination,
- KS> two of which disable the termination on the drive and allow for
- KS> external termination. The main board on the 3000 doesn't appear to
- KS> have any terminators.
-
- Termination isn't that much of a problem with internal drives, I have a
- Q105 (the old bulky one) and the ST157N on the A2091, no termination on
- either drive, partly because the resistors for the Seagate were 'snipped
- off' rather than pulled out by a stupid repairman asked to remove them
- when physically installing the drive for me - might as well let him do
- it, while he had the machine stripped down anyway, rather than stripping
- it down again after getting it home after warranty repair. (simplified
- explanation, it was a loooooooong story .... )
-
- KS> There are two empty connection spots just
- KS> behind the scsi connection on the main board. Are these where the
- KS> terminators would be? I've tried every combination of the
- KS> termination power jumpers on the Seagate and have not come up with a
- KS> workable combination. Am I looking the wrong area for this problem?
-
- Don't mess with all that stuff, SCSI is mostly just plug and play, all
- you need to do is to set device ID properly, but there should be a
- jumper to allow for relaxed timing on the SCSI-bus during startup, you
- might want to set that one.
-
- KS> Has anyone sucessfully connected this type of drive with the same
- KS> set up? The crash of the Maxtor had nothing to do with the A3000. I
- KS> droped it and that was all she wrote (and read). Any help is much
- KS> appreciated. Help me save my 3000 please.
-
- I've done as good as I could, don't own one of them newer machines
- myself, so I can't be more precise.
